Planning for Pandemic

The University is currently working with Benton County Health Department to plan a response to a pandemic flu outbreak. In addition, the University is developing an internal contingency plan to govern the campus during such a crisis.

Oregon State University has taken significant steps to prepare the University for a pandemic flu event. The planning is ongoing and involves critical personnel and department throughout the University. As of January 2008:

  • OSU has formed a Pandemic Flu Planning Team of campus experts and key response departments to conduct pre-event planning and prepare specific pandemic flu response procedures.
  • In January 2006 OSU met with six other Oregon University System universities to coordinate pandemic planning efforts.
  • Key decision points are being developed to guide the executive leadership who may have to make decisions about curtailing public events or suspending classes.
  • A policy for Social Distancing has been approved by the administration. This policy establishes the foundation for which planning efforts are being developed.
  • The OSU Master Emergency Plan has been rolled out and currently Satellite Operation Centers are being created at the College and Unit level.
  • Essential functions and essential personnel are being identified for the University's continued functioning during a pandemic event.
  • Procedure and plans are being implemented to house, feed, and provide medical care to students living in on-campus housing.
  • In an outbreak or pandemic, Benton County Health Department and the State of Oregon have authority to direct public health actions, including quarantine or taking over university buildings. OSU is working closely with these agencies to make sure our preparations and plans are consistent.
  • The Environmental Health & Safety group has analyzed the need for personnel protective equipment (PPE) and is developing a procedure for use. EH&S has purchased 5,000 n95 respirators and additional fit test kits to provide respiratory protection for essential personnel.
